King Arthur's K.O.R.T.
An MVP Software Production
Copyright 1994 Brandon McMullen
DESCRIPTION: This game puts you in the role of a knight that must conquer
Great Britain. As a knight of the round table you must build up your campaign
army and conquer Britain's territories one by one. However, there are other
knights of the round table that are in pursuit of that same goal. King
Arthur's Champion will be the knight that successfully defeats all the other
knights, in the conquest of Britain.

Note to Windows Users
---------------------
King Arthur's KORT will run as a DOS application, spawned under Windows, but you
may encounter sound card conflicts. The best solution if you run into conflicts
is to completely exit from Windows before starting King Arthur's KORT.
Clicking on the DOS prompt is NOT exiting Windows. You must actually close your
Windows session.
A Note on Mouse Use
------------------
DOS requires that a mouse driver is loaded before any program can recognize the
mouse. Windows has a built-in mouse driver, but this will not work in DOS.
Before you attempt to run King Arthur's KORT make sure the MOUSE.COM or
MOUSE.SYS file is loaded. This file is provided on a disk that came with your
mouse, or it may be in the MOUSE or DOS directory on your hard drive. Check
your DOS manual if you don't know how to load this file.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
----------------
The object of the game is to conquer Britain. This is accomplished by
defeating your 4 opponents. When you capture a knight's home castle
(identified on the map as as small castle with flags of his color) that knight
is defeated.
To begin the game type KORT.
PROGRAM INTERFACE
-----------------
The game is operated through a mouse interface. The left button is used to
select the on-screen icons and the right button is used to attack territories
or get on-line help on a selected icon.
Left-clicking on a territory will display the information known about that
territory. If you own the territory, then the army information, peasant
population and castle strength is accurate. If you don't own it then the army
information may or may not be accurate -- the best way to find out is to SCOUT
the territory. The army units displayed will be those of the territory
defenders, in addition to those in the hero's campaign army, if present.
Left-clicking on the displayed hero's picture will display the information
known about that hero and his campaign army. If it is your hero, then the army
information and hero attributes is accurate. If it is an enemy hero, then the
army information may or may not be accurate -- the best way to find out is to
SCOUT the territory where the hero MAY be located (identified by the small flag
on the map). The army units displayed will be those only present in the hero's
campaign army used for attack.
PROGRAM OPTIONS
---------------
Only the PAGE and SQUIRE skill level is playable in the basic version of the
game. These are the easy and moderate level of game play. The computer
opponents play with average ability. The Deluxe version allows you to play
all 3 skill levels.
PAGE level is the easiest level to play. The enemy knights have poor battle
tactics, and do not joust very well. Also only good random/special events will
happen to your kingdom. But most of all, the territory and army info is
always up-to-date and accurate; hence you never need to scout on the PAGE
level. This is selectable only in the Deluxe version.
SQUIRE level is the average level to play. The enemies have better defensive
strategy and joust fairly well. In addition, both good and bad random/special
events will happen to your kingdom. Also, in this level, only the territory
ownership is known to be accurate. That is you know what territories are owned
by whom (outlined by the hero's color), but the army quantities and castle
strengths are only as accurate as last scouted or attacked. So if you have not
scouted or attacked a territory in a while, chances are that the info
displayed, when the territory is clicked, is not accurate.
You may only play Sir Lancelot in the Basic edition. The Deluxe version allows
the selection of any of the 5 knights of the round table.
SIR LANCELOT is the strongest of all the knights. However, he is quite
unlucky. His territory color is BLUE.
PARZIFAL is the luckiest of all the knights. However, he is not as strong or
charismatic as the other knights. His territory color is BROWN.
SIR GARETH is a well-rounded knight. His territory color is ORANGE.
SIR TRISTRAM is the most charasmatic of all the knights. His honor is the
lowest. His territory color is RED.
SIR GAWAIN is the most honorable of all the knights, but he suffers with a low
luck. His territory color is PURPLE.
Music and digitized sound effects are selectable on/off.
KNIGHT ABILITIES
----------------
CHARISMA determines how well a knight leads his troops in battle.
HONOR determines how much taxes are collected.
LUCK affects all aspects of game play.
COAT-OF-ARMS
------------
There are 7 different coat-of-arms that are uniquely assigned to each knight
at the beginning of the game. The coat-of-arms adjust the knight's abilities,
increases the army size or sometimes give an additional starting territory.
TERRITORIES
-----------
Each territory has the following characteristics:
MOUNTAINS determines how much gold is received for taxes.
PLAINS determines peasant population growth.
RIVERS determines peasant population growth and castle defense strength.
CASTLE strength determines how well a territory defends from attackers.
Each territory contains a certain amount of peasants and may have a defending
army present.
ARMY UNITS
----------
PEASANTS serve only as defense for territories. Peasants also determine how
much taxes are collected. Peasants may not be recruited into a campaign army.
KNIGHTS are best for attack and defensive roles. Knights cost 8 gold each to
recruit. Attack rating is 6, defense rating is 5.
FOOT SOLDIERS are good for defense. Foot soldiers cost 4 gold each to recruit.
Attack rating is 2, defense rating is 4.
BOWMEN are good for attacking. Bowmen cost 4 gold each to recruit. Attack
rating is 4, defense rating is 2.
CATAPULTS are best for attacking castle fortifications. Catapults cost 10
gold each to recruit. Attack rating is 8, defense rating is 1. Also for every
100 catapults you use to assault a castle, that castle's strength is reduced
by 1.
HERO ACTIONS
------------
Your hero may take actions during his turn that are territorial, militaristic
or hero oriented.
